A question about sentence structure

[顯示] from an article "a layer of snow keeps a lot of the Earth's heat from escaping into the atmosphere."

i want to ask why the author use "from escaping into the atmosphere" i mean what sentence structure is it? is it a simplified relative clause??

i think the mean is "a layer of snow keeps a lot of the Earth's heat which escape from the atmosphere" - but what about the "into"?? not neccessary??

or "a layer of snow keeps a lot of the Earth's heat which escape from where is into the atmosphere"

also, i have sought out a phrase "if it was/were not for + noun, ......". is the meaning equal to "如果唔係 某人/某一樣野 的話, ......" ??

please explain to me if anyone can help~
