Going over mountains by his bike with six-hour long trip.

The English courses were aimed for all fifty-three students who were at the age from kindergarten to sixth grade. No fashion advertisement, no air-conditioners, even no shuttle bus, this course was worthier and more meaningful than other classes. It was an unparalleled English course with riding a 120-kilo-meter round trip by Daniel’s own feet.

Three years ago, one of Daniel friends told him that no teacher was willing to come to Slay teaching English. Such plights occurred to his curiosity. He deemed that devoting himself in fulfilling what others need was his responsibility. He, then, came to Taiwan for just one year and attended to graduate institute of telecommunication engineering in Chiao Tung University. He got nothing, and scholarship was his only finical resource, but he spoke smooth English with local tone. That was helpful to do something.

He volunteered to come Atayal community to teach English, and it lasted for three years long. Daniel expressed that he never counted how long he totally rode within three years. The one thing which he always kept in his mind was that he could never absent from classes. The principle of Slay school recalled and told us that Daniel was late for classes because of breakdown with his bike, and then one of teachers picks him up soon. That was the only one absentation. In that day, all English courses were postponed to the following day.

Almost for ten years, Daniel had been an expert engineer on wireless network technology before coming Taiwan. With his excellent background and practiced experiences, he, undoubtedly, could be a high tech millionaire getting high salary; however, he gave up and made a decision different from other engineers.

Daniel rode fast on the flat in the downtown. It was early, and streetlamps sparked in the lonely darkness, and the surface of Daniel’s oval-shaped helmet reflected streetlights just like shooting stars lighting the dark night one by another. Half of an hour, he arrived at Chu Ton, and taking a rest for two rice balls which were his breakfast, and then he recruited energy to counter the following mountainside. After passing Nan Wan toward Jainshih Bridge, it was getting high and steep. Streetlamps were decreasing one by one as moving forward, and the sky was gradually getting brightening. Stars were sparkling like many small shiny points hanging on the dark night.

While Daniel turned off the bike lamp, the crescent was like a loyal security guard lightening up the winding mountainside in the darkness to protect him away from danger. Accompanying with constantly breathing and grinds of chains and gear wheels, he was in a hurry on his ride under the moonlight. This mountainside was unfrequented all day long. In the end of the asphalt road, the county of government declared with a signal showing several words as this road ends up here due to short of governmental budgets.

On the way to Slay, he also prepared several tea eggs to feed stray dogs. In the beginning, stray dogs would bite or bark at him. However, since having delicious eggs they always shook tails to show friendship towards him every time as they noticed the sight of him coming from far distance. He was so kind to stray dogs that he showed much stronger passion for Atayal students who lived in the remote mountain.
