A 120-kilometer English course

Oh my dear, it would be a lovely day when you told me “I love you”

A man from America and a crowed of students in Atayal Tribe totally lived in the different places which were far away from each other. Daniel took a long trip from Michigan in America to Slay elementary school in Jianshih country in Taiwan. He used to a engineer ten years ago, and studied Telecommunication for an academic degree in Chiao Tung University. With his educational background and excellent experiences, he, absolutely, was able to be a high-tech millionaire; nevertheless, he made another decision different from other engineers.

Three years ago, he voluntarily came here as an English teacher while hearing that no one was willing to go to this wilderness place, Slay Elementary School, where was located in Jianshih country. For him, this was not just for fun or by fits and snatches. That would be a challengeable task. It would let one give up to ride for sixty kilometers along the rough mountainside where was far away from downtown and filled with dangerous happening. Moreover, two principles were already dead of falling into ravine when they were on the way to Slay. In spite of uncertain danger, Daniel did not still change his determination even if taking a risk with his life of riding on this deadly mountainside.

In the past three years, he, step by step, always rode his bike from Chiao Tung University in the downtown to a remote village of Atayal Tribe which was at an attitude of 1700 meters. Typhoons, rainy days, even rarely snowy days never deterred his will from coming here, because there were many Atayal Tribe students waiting for him to attend formal English courses. It would also never be an easy task for a car to drive on this serpentine and precipitous road. Within three years it took a forty-years-old foreigner almost two thousands kilo miles riding on this road without any complaint. What did Daniel want as riding on this sparsely-populated road without any payment or material feedback?

It was ten minutes pass three in the morning, and Daniel drew his bike leaving his dormitory. One feet stepping on the footrest with pressing heavily, the tires of bike were rolling up and moving forward just like a canoe disappearing in the dark night. This day was following up Christmas in 2005. Taiwan was shrouding in the cold current with just twelve degree in the morning, and all people were sleeping sweetly in this island. Daniel was on his way to somewhere.

Where was he going in the darkness?

He was riding through Chu Ton, Nan Wan, Jainshih, and moving forward into a further place where was a school called Slay at an attitude of 1700 meters for his teaching of English courses.
