Lacks of educational resources and hand-made teaching aids.

A few teachers were willing to come to this remote place, because they had to take a long time to arrive at school, need to live in the school, and only go home in the weekend. Most teachers could not get accustomed to their life like that. Daniel had been to Slay for three years, and he was the only one teacher who stayed in Slay for a very long time. In these years, there were altogether three principles serving in the school.

A foreigner unexpectedly became the senior English teacher. With his devotion, the principle applied for another English teacher serving in Substitute Service. English courses were executed smoothly under their effort. Denel always admired the young English teacher was excellent, and tried to give every student a hand. Lacks of educational resources, deficiency of culture shock and disadvantage of the minorities brought these Atayal Tribe children more challenges for their future in this complicated world.

When somebody asked Daniel that what he would do for these students in Slay, he said he wanted to have students know that someone really cared about them, that they were good, and that they should never give up easily. Aborigines were minority groups in Taiwan, and people in Taiwan did not know very much about them. However, in Daniel’s mind, they were precious. “Many aborigines were in danger of extinction in the whole world, and that was my pleasure to get in touch with them” he says.

Kindergarten courses was Daniel’s favorite. The day Daniel taught the concept of “the Big” and “the Small”, and he tried to let students find two objects, one was big and the other one was small. Four successive courses passing, Daniel was still full of energy, and acted energetic with his barefoot on the floor. All students requited his effort with cheerful smile in the cold winter.
