On a Sunday early this September, a young couple was driving down south on Highway 3 to attend their friend’s wedding in Taichung when they were hit by another car near the Tai-An toll station. The collision sent their car flipping a number of times before landing on its roof, injuring the man and his wife. The driver who hit the couple passed out when the police arrived, and a cell phone was found on his lap. The couple were lucky to sustain only minor injuries, given the extent of the impact. When the next accident occurs involving drivers using cell phones, however, would other passengers be as lucky? To protect the public on the road, we now need to impose a law banning drivers using cell phones.
